Well, In compliance with the provisions of article 39 of the Organic Law on Agrobiodiversity, Seeds and Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture (LOASFAS), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) carries out operations in commercial houses in the five cantons of the province of Napo.
During these operations, emphasis has been placed on monitoring the proper storage of seeds and verifying their quality for sale to agricultural producers. Nurseries have also been visited to ensure that the vegetative material comes from commercial operators duly registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
The main objective of these actions is to promote sustainable agriculture and preserve biological diversity in the region, ensuring that seeds and vegetative materials used in agricultural production meet the quality and origin standards established by current regulations.
Luis Freire, a merchant from the Carlos Julio Arosemena Tola canton, expressed his support for the control operations carried out by the MAG. Freire stressed that the success of his business is closely linked to the well-being and success of farmers. According to him, these measures provide the necessary guarantees to ensure quality and efficiency in the agricultural production process.
“Currently, there are 25 operators registered,” said José Valarezo, seed and cultivar inspector in Napo.
Valarezo said that, as seed inspectors, they are empowered by law to confiscate seeds and vegetative material from premises that do not comply with current legal regulations.
The main requirements for marketing plants and seeds include: having a RUC, submitting a detailed list of the plants or seeds to be marketed, submitting a formal request to the MAG District Authority and making a one-time payment of 50 dollars to BanEcuador for the registration fee. Commercial operators must renew their registration every three years.
