After the important presence at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, a new international trip for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Megaron, on June 14 in Athens, the maestro Zubin Mehta with the Orchestra del Maggio and the violinist Pinchas Zukerman in a gala concert hosted in the Acropolis in the spectacular Herodes Atticus theater with an entirely Brahmsian program that includes the concert in D minor op77 for violin and orchestra and the symphony n 2 in D major op. 73, two compositions just performed in May on the occasion of the first two concerts of the “Ciclo Brahms”, a cycle that puts on the poster, in Florence, the performance – until 6 July – of the four symphonies and four concerts performed by important soloists such as Pinchas Zukerman (June 8), then Amanda Forsyth (June 12), Daniil Trifonov (June 18 and 21) and Daniel Barenboim (July 6).

The Maggio continues its intense programming activity, also contemplating the international scene and being in this case practically still the only Italian musical institution to cross the borders of the country; the trip to Athens precedes those scheduled for mid-August to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of the Grafenegg Festival in Austria on August 14, and then on August 15 in Budapest where two concerts are scheduled with the Maggio Orchestra and the soloist Rudolf Buchbinder under the direction of Maestro Zubin Mehta in a program with compositions by Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms.

The program of the evening in Athens opens with the Concerto in D major for violin and orchestra op. 77 composed at a time when Brahms was experiencing one of his most peaceful and fruitful creative seasons, with the satisfaction of having managed to try his hand – and twice in a row, according to a constant of his way of working – with the Symphony. In fact, one of the first reasons for the unrepeatable charm of the concert is the sense of formal tranquility that one breathes almost uninterruptedly, also directly linked to the naturalness with which the vigorous symphony of the score balances itself with the soloist’s part. To conclude, the Symphony n. 2 in D major composed with surprising rapidity when compared to the very long gestation, which lasted almost twenty years, which accompanied his first symphonic composition. If the First had been hailed as the ‘tenth symphony’, alluding to the Beethoven heritage of which Brahms is the guardian and guarantor, the Second was called ‘pastoral’ for its predominantly lyric and melodic character, but also ‘Viennese’ for the use of the waltz rhythm in two of the four movements.
