Between potential Sahelistan and club of putschists, the Sahel is “a polygon of crises”, sums up a diplomat. The events in Niamey – a coup led by a presidential guard against the president they were supposed to protect – are a source of concern for several capitals of the Maghreb countries. Mohamed Bazoum has become the symbol of the man to fall in the Sahel, because he was democratically elected. In the wake of the rejection of democracy, abundantly fueled by Russian trolls and populists preaching on social media, there is growing hostility towards Paris and European institutions. Even the consensual UN is no longer welcome with its locally deployed forces. A little music that is rising in the Maghreb.
