More and more people have a hunting license. So that they don’t have to forego comfort in nature, the start-up Zauberjagd builds luxury high seats – equipped with bed and USB sockets. In the event of criticism, the founder refers to the sustainability of the stands.

Whe has a hunting license, spends a lot of time in nature – or rather: on the high seat. Wild boars and deer can be observed better from there.

Most of the time, this wooden high seat is uncomfortably tight and wobbly. When Patrick Jonas injured himself on a rotten high seat one day, he took this “negative experience”, as he describes it, as an opportunity to build one himself. In fact, it is safer and more comfortable.

The premium equipment of the magic hunt high seats includes, for example, air conditioning, foot and seat heating for the cold winter months and sockets for smartphones. The owner gets electricity from the solar system installed on the roof. On top of that, the pulpit offers enough space for a bed.

15,000 euros for a luxury hunter’s stand

Zauberjagd builds the robust towers from weather-resistant materials. The base that forms the long legs of the high seat is made of steel. The pulpit, i.e. the box on it, consists of aluminum honeycombs, which are also used in boat and aircraft construction.

That drives up the price: The cheapest package, i.e. the base and pulpit without any interior fittings, costs 15,500 euros. A metal construction company in Rhineland-Palatinate is making the construction together with the interior fittings. Zauberjagd takes over the planning and sales.

The prices suggest that not every hunter can afford such a high seat. A frame made of wood, as most forest owners build, costs around 1000 euros. The founder from Rhineland-Palatinate primarily addresses high earners from industry, entrepreneurs and wealthy families with magic hunt, he says.

Since the start of sales in January, Jonas has sold 20 high seats through his website – even to customers from Sweden. In purely mathematical terms, that would be a turnover of around 400,000 euros. He would like to introduce a leasing model soon.

Are luxury hunting stands unnecessary?

“Long-established hunters often say that a high seat has to be made of wood,” says Jonas. Many would fall back on the territory’s own wood and set up their own booth. Then why the expensive fun?

“Many nails are often used in the self-made high seats, the interior is lined with carpet”, which subsequently “releases harmful substances into nature”. According to the company, the luxury towers can be used for several generations.

During the same period of time, wooden high seats have to be replaced several times, which increases the consumption of resources. On average, his systems are more sustainable, thinks Jonas.

There is another argument in favor of his high seats, he says: “More and more young people want to go back to nature and not forego a certain level of comfort”.

In fact, more and more people are getting a hunting license – currently almost 400,000 people in this country have a license to hunt, and the trend is rising.

Jonas himself did not get to know the sport of hunting through his own family, but through a neighbor. He himself hunts about twice a week – enjoys the quiet at dawn and the birdsong.

The founder is currently working in an agricultural engineering company alongside his start-up. Jonas worked on a prototype in his garage with his father for two years.

He paid the costs, which he claims to be in the six-figure range, out of his own pocket. He is currently working on a mobile high seat that is built on a trailer frame so that it can be easily pulled behind the car.
