Former basketball player Magic Johnson launched this Friday an appeal to African Americans to vote for the Democratic candidate for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Kamala’s opponent (former President Donald Trump) Last time he promised a lot of things to the black community, things he didn’t deliver on. We need to make sure that black men understand that,” Johnson said at a Harris rally in Flint, Mich. “That’s why I’m here: to make sure that black men understand the importance of getting out and voting and then voting for the next president of the United States,” added the famous athlete.

Although the African-American community has traditionally overwhelmingly supported Democrats, some polls indicate that Trump is managing to attract some of the male vote. “We have to call people. We have to knock on doors. Before and after going to church, not during, but before and after,” said the winner of five NBA rings with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Originally from Michigan, Johnson is politically active and supported both the current president, Joe Biden, and former president Barack Obama in their campaigns. (2009-2017) in previous cycles.

As for Harris, Johnson assured that she is an “intelligent, strong and passionate” candidate. “No one will work harder than her. She is committed to you, to the people of the United States, to the people of Michigan. She will be a president for everyone,” Johnson said.

Furthermore, the former basketball player underlined that 2024 “is the year of women”. “We just saw what Mexico did by electing (Claudia Sheinbaum) its first president. You know where I’m going with this. Let’s make sure that in the United States we elect our first president: Kamala Harris,” he added.

With 32 days to go until the November 5 elections, Harris’ campaign is pressing the accelerator in the few states that, like Michigan, are called to decide the elections. Before the Flint rally, the vice president attended another campaign event with workers and unionists in Detroit and was also expected to meet with leaders of Michigan’s large Arab community, disillusioned with their government for its support of Israel and the war on Gaza.
