What you should know: Magistrate Romain Koffi is now the new president of the Cotonou commercial court. He was officially installed in these functions on Friday November 3, 2023, during a solemn hearing chaired by the president of the Commercial Court of Appeal, William KodjohKpakpassou. The magistrate Romain Koffi takes the reins of this court with regard to article 10 paragraphs 1 to 3 of law n°2001-35 of February 21, 2003 establishing the status of the judiciary which provides “The magistrates of the seat or the public prosecutor’s office are installed in their functions in solemn audience of the jurisdiction to which they are appointed. A report will be drawn up for this installation. It is kept at the court registry. Magistrates cannot perform any act of their functions before having been duly installed.”
What do they say : During the hearing, the Prosecutor General at the Cotonou Court of Appeal, Christian Adjakas noted that the applicant held the functions of investigating judge at the Abomey-Calavi court and judge at the commercial court of Cotonou from December 2017 until his appointment as president of the Cotonou commercial court. He then reminded him that a head of jurisdiction must demonstrate availability, humility, openness, ability to listen, communicate and be responsible. “The president of the court sets a good example and ensures the management and organization of his jurisdiction,” he said. Proceeding with the installation of the new president of the Cotonou commercial court, Romain Koffi, the president of the Commercial Court of Appeal, William KodjohKpakpassou stressed that the applicant, worked with self-sacrifice, competence, efficiency and courage to make of this court a credible jurisdiction in the Beninese judicial landscape. “Today, called to preside over this jurisdiction, I can say that you have the skills to lead the destiny of this institution, through the resolution of commercial disputes with quality, with speed and the confidence of players in the economic world,” he suggested. He finally urged him to fulfill his mission with dignity for the good of justice and the satisfaction of users of commercial justice.
Between the lines : It should be noted that the hearing took place in the presence of the Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice and Legislation Yvon Détchenou, personalities at various levels as well as relatives and friends of the recipient.
