Outraged by this, the country’s president and prime minister have been fighting for the 17th day in a row, demanding their resignation. They also insist that an interim government be formed. Insisting on their demand, a few days ago, college students besieged the Prime Minister’s official residence and staged a protest chanting ‘Go home Rajapaksa’.
But President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had recently stated categorically that he would not resign for any reason. Mahinda Rajapaksa has also recently announced that he will not resign. Outraged college students have been besieging the Prime Minister’s official residence, chanting ‘Go home Rajapaksa’.
In this context, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today held consultations with members of the ruling party’s local councils and former provincial councilors. Then he said:
Interruptions to essential services, including electricity, fuel and medicine, and the queuing of the public to purchase them must be brought to an end as soon as possible. Once these problems are resolved, steps will be taken to control the prices of essential commodities.
I fully understand the impact on the country of waiting for someone else to fulfill these important responsibilities. Rajapaksa said everyone should remember that I am behind every action taken to save the country from this dilemma.
Meanwhile, members of the provincial council unanimously passed a resolution saying neither Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa nor the government should resign. To this, Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he is not going to resign and that no one needs to be afraid of this.
