The main suspect in the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann, Christian Brueckner, 45, had his trial suspended in Germany, according to information published by the German tabloid Bild on Thursday (20).
The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Braunschweig brought charges against Brueckner for the British child’s abduction and murder, and he would appear in court in the coming months.
The Braunschweig Regional Court, however, declared that it had no jurisdiction over the charges and revoked the arrest warrant.
Despite this, Brueckner will not be released. He is serving a seven-year prison sentence for rape.
The accusations were based on investigations carried out in Germany that uncovered “concrete evidence” of the girl’s death. Until then, the girl was only treated as missing, and there was hope that she would be located.
Brueckner was accused of several sexual crimes that occurred in the region where the British family was vacationing, and this was the main line of investigation of the case.
His lawyer, Friedrich Fulscher, argues that Braunschweig prosecutors lack legal jurisdiction over the alleged sexual assaults in Portugal.
The British girl disappeared during a family trip to Portugal in 2007, when she was 3 years old. Recently, a young Polish woman claimed that she would be the daughter of the McCann couple, but a DNA test overturned this claim.
