Major ministerial reshuffle in Spain, foreign minister ousted

by times news cr

Criticized by Spanish political circles for her poor management of several sensitive issues, Gonzalez Laya was replaced by the current Spanish ambassador to France, José Manuel Albares.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs was particularly noted for her disastrous management of the crisis triggered with Rabat after authorising, last April, the illegal entry into Spanish territory of the leader of the separatists, a certain Brahim Ghali, under a false identity so that he could escape Spanish justice.

In this cabinet reshuffle that affected seven departments, the Minister of Justice, Juan Carlos Campo, was replaced by the President of the Senate, Pilar Llop, and the Minister of Education, Isabel Celáa, left her post to Pilar Alegría, until now government delegate in Aragon.

Raquel Sánchez was appointed Minister of Transport, replacing José Luis Abalos, Diana Morant, new Minister of Science and Innovation and Isabel Rodriguez was appointed Minister of Territorial Policy and government spokesperson.

The number two in the government, Carmen Calvo, Minister of the Presidency and Relations with Parliament, left the government to be replaced as First Vice President by Nadia Calviño, current Minister of Economy and number three in the executive.

This is the third ministerial restructuring in Spain since the coalition government was sworn in in January 2020. The new government will hold its first Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
