Thunderbolt in the television world: Arcom decided on Wednesday not to retain the channels C8 and NRJ12 for the renewal of DTT frequencies. C8 is the most sanctioned channel in France for numerous violations and outbursts on air, particularly in the show Touche pas à mon poste, presented by Cyril Hanouna.

In contrast, the news channel CNews, regularly reprimanded by Arcom and owned, like C8, by the Canal+ group under the conservative billionaire Vincent Bolloré, was selected for the renewal of its frequency.

By dismissing C8, which has accumulated more than 7.6 million euros in fines due to the missteps of its star host Cyril Hanouna, the regulator sends a strong signal to channel publishers about the necessity to respect their obligations.

The withdrawal of its frequency will not necessarily mean the complete end of C8, given the broadcasting possibilities offered by the Internet, set-top boxes, or smart TVs, while Cyril Hanouna may continue to work on another channel or media outlet.

The projects of Ouest-France and Daniel Kretinsky selected

The channel projects proposed by the Ouest-France group and billionaire Daniel Kretinsky are both preselected by Arcom for DTT frequencies in 2025. Arcom based its decision on “the interest of each project for the public in light of the priority imperative of pluralism of socio-cultural expression currents“, the statement indicates.

OF TV, the Ouest-France project, and RéelsTV, the one backed by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky through the company CMI France (Elle, Télé 7 Jours, Franc-Tireur, Ici Paris, Le Télégramme, France Dimanche…), mark the assault of the press on the small screen. Ouest-France aims to be “the channel of real life” and the first general national channel “located outside of Paris“, in Rennes.

“RéelsTV” promises to “restore the original concept of public debate“, relying on the “know-how” of other CMI France media. After the public hearings in July, a negotiation phase will open between the selected candidates and Arcom to establish their specifications.

DTT, launched in 2005 in mainland France, still largely structures the French audiovisual landscape and remains the only mode of television reception for nearly 20% of households equipped with a set. In total, 24 projects were in the running for 15 DTT frequencies expiring in 2025.
