Majority of kidney transplant patients work and function well at work

From research that appeared in Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology shows that patients who have undergone a kidney transplant function well at work. According to the researchers, this is an important message to employers.

Until now, little was known about the labor participation of kidney transplant patients, nor had it ever been investigated how these patients function at work. That is why Tim Knobbe, Daan Kremer and colleagues from the UMCG’s Nephrology Department investigated how many kidney transplant patients are employed and how they assess their functioning at work.

They analyzed data from the database of the TransplantLines trial on 668 working-life patients who had undergone a kidney transplant more than a year ago. 56% of them turned out to be in paid work. Although renal transplant patients are often fatigued and experience side effects of immunosuppressive drugs, their functioning at work was found to be comparable to that of a group of the general working population and a group of working potential kidney donors. According to the researchers, this is due to their high motivation or possible changes at work that ensure a good balance between their capacity and tasks. In addition, the patients indicated that they function better at work after the transplant than before the transplant.
