A consultative meeting was held between the Indian Olympic Association, the Government of India and the International Olympic Committee. Abhinav Bindra, former Indian athlete and India’s first Olympic gold medalist in the individual event, was present at the meeting.

Abhinav Bindra has given 5 important suggestions to the Government of India and the Indian Olympic Association to promote sports in India and develop India as a sporting nation.

Pointing out the importance and support given to athletics in India like never before, Abhinav Bindra pointed out that it was because of this that India won medals in Tokyo Olympics.

Abhinav Bindra’s 5 Tips to Make India a Sports Nation:

1. Representation of Athletes in Governance

Athletes should be represented in government so that their demands and voices can be recorded. A commission should be set up for athletes. Athletes should be represented in the decision making authority.

2. Organization of membership in the Indian Olympic Association

Organizations for Olympic, Commonwealth and Asian Games should elect members by voting only. State Olympic Associations can appoint members directly without voting. All voting members must abide by the Olympic Charter, the National Sports Code and the Athletics Commission.

3. Checks and balances in management

The Indian Olympic Association should clearly define the governance and responsibilities of the Indian Olympic Association General Committee, Executive Committee, Commissions. To do so, the General Assembly can only delegate powers to the entire Executive Committee rather than to individual office bearers.

4. Coordination and transparency in operational and financial matters

The Indian Olympic Association bylaws must contain provisions prescribing a proper framework for internal and external audits, reporting and public transparency.

5. Institutional Mechanism for Dispute Resolution and Athletes Welfare

To resolve disputes, disputes and issues, inquiry body, ombudsman, moralist, safety officer should be appointed.
