Controversy over the words spoken by Sergio Barzetti during the broadcast on Rai Uno
Controversy over the words spoken by chef Sergio Barzetti during the episode of ‘It’s Always Midday’ aired on Rai 1 on Tuesday 19 December. While explaining a recipe to the presenter Antonella Clerici (a risotto with bubbles and late radicchio), Barzetti indulged in a tasteless joke about women. On the table there is a glass of prosecco, used for the recipe. «How much do I put in the recipe? A glass? And what do we do with the rest? We drink it, in the meantime. And, from there, one thing leads to another” jokes Clerici. “And then you go and do something important: you go and stun the prey,” adds Barzetti amid general laughter. “Said like that… it’s not nice” Antonella Clerici tries to tone down the joke. The chef then takes matters further: «When I was baiting my wife, I tried to chase her by giving her a drink to stun her. I didn’t know that she was a teetotaler.”
The director of Day Time Rai Entertainment, Angelo Mellone, intervened on the controversy: «What chef Sergio Barzetti said during the episode of «It’s always Midday» constitutes an expression that cannot find a place in the language of public service, even if presented in the form of a joke. For this reason I share the embarrassment felt by Antonella Clerici during the broadcast, and I know that Clerici herself will find the right words tomorrow to reiterate to viewers that in Rai there can be no space for words and phrases disrespectful towards the dignity of the person.” .
