Making magic: Leroy Sana’s show in Milan

by time news

It is unclear how this European season for Bayern Munich will end, but one thing is certain: they know how to start. Tonight (Wednesday) they opened their Champions League campaign smoothly, with a 0:2 away win at the San Siro against Inter. This is the 19th time (!) in a row that Bayern have won their debut game in the Champions League.

Leroy Sane became the big hero of the Bavarians tonight with “almost a double” (a goal and an assist for an own goal), and signed the first three points (and probably not the last) as part of the Champions 2022/23. So what did he do tonight? A goal, an assist, three key passes, 2 successful dribbles out of 3 and 3 duel wins out of four during his 84 minutes on the pitch.

Sane’s numbers at the start of this season are simply amazing: in just 8 appearances in all competitions, he already has four goals and three assists. Along the way, he became the fourth German conqueror of his kind in the history of the plant. Only two players have scored 10 goals in the Champions League in fewer appearances than Sane: Roy McKay, and one named Robert Lewandowski..

With or without regard to his performance, in an interview after the game, Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann spoke about the decision to play without a natural striker: “We have a lot of ‘flexible’ players in the front who cooperate great. It’s always nice to score and win games. There is definitely room for improvement and moments that we can do better. We work on it in training.”
