Malappuram: A gallery at the Poongode football ground near Vandoor collapsed, injuring around 100 people. The accident happened around 9.30 pm. About 6,000 people had come to the ground to watch the football match. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Nilambur, Vandoor, Perinthalmanna and Manjeri.
Three of them sustained serious injuries. The accident took place during a football match organized by the Janakiya Samithi under the leadership of Poongode Friends Club. An hour before the start of the final match of the month – long tournament, the stadium was packed with spectators. The spectators, who had entered the ground with a ticket of Rs.
The organizers lost control as the crowd turned out to be miscalculated. Fearing that there would be clashes if spectators were not allowed on the ground, the organizers issued tickets and drove all the people to the ground.
Though permission was obtained for the match, the police said that a case would be registered against the organizers in case of any violation of the law.
