The Algerian Minister of Health confirmed, in a press release, that cases of imported diphtheria and malaria have been recorded in the southern wilayas, while local populations, for their part, speak on social networks of a large spread of these diseases after the recent floods in the region. These populations also complain of enormous problems in patient care and a lack of vaccination coverage.
The measures announced in Algiers to deal with the health situation in the south of the country indicate that the spread of malaria and diphtheria has reached proportions requiring the supply of the region, by air, with large quantities of medicines and medical staff to assess the situation and needs.
The official figures available to date have been provided by the president of the Algerian National Health Security Agency, Kamel Sanhadji, who confirmed, in statements to Algerian radio, 421 cases of malaria recorded since the end of last August, mainly in In Guezzam, according to “Le Quotidien d’Oran”.
Likewise, he confirmed that the wilaya of Tamanrasset records one to two cases of diphtheria per day, adding that the question of treating patients with malaria and diphtheria arises acutely in the most remote wilayas.
