An end to political uncertainty in Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim took office as the Prime Minister. The appointment of a new prime minister followed the direct intervention of the king to resolve the political crisis. It is not clear which parties have reached an agreement to form the government.

The political uncertainty in the country was acute after no front had a majority in the general elections. Finally, King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmed Shah appointed Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister to resolve the political uncertainty. Anwar Ibrahim faces the challenge of getting Malaysia out of the crisis.

The National Alliance led by former Prime Minister Muhiuddin Yasin won 72 seats. Muhiuddin Yasin was expected to come to power with the support of 2 regional parties. Former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yakub’s Barisan Nasional alliance, which included UMNO, managed to win only 30 seats. The coalition’s move to declare support for the new unity government is unexpected. The picture of which parties have reached an agreement to form the government is not yet clear.

The United Malay National Organization (UMNO) has expressed support for the unity government. In the elections held on 19th to the 222-member parliament, the 3 important fronts did not get a majority. Meanwhile, the Harapan front won 82 seats. Anwar Ibrahim made his political debut as a supporter of Mahathir Mohamad.

He was sacked in 1999 as deputy prime minister and jailed on charges of corruption and same-sex sexual harassment. Life was in and out of jail for two decades. There was also a ban on contesting elections.
