A fire broke out on Monday in the Lafiabougou landfill following clashes between young neighborhoods and agents of Economic Interest Groups (GIE)

To disperse the crowd, the security forces used tear gas which, according to testimony, was the cause of the fire in the garbage dump. There was more fear than harm. The Civil Protection deployed to the scene was able to control the fire.

Rising smoke covers the sky. The whole area smelled of a pestilential odor. From the Place de la Can to the transit depot, heaps of garbage (household and similar waste) had been dumped on the public highway by angry carters.

Barricades erected using tires and stones made traffic even more difficult.

The burnt garbage seriously affects the inhabitants. Requested by the Governor of the District of Bamako, the Regional Director of Civil Protection, Lieutenant-Colonel Adama M Diarra and his men were able to control the fire. “There can be several disadvantages when the garbage catches fire, in particular the pollution of the atmosphere and even the worsening of the health of the patients next door”, he warns, stressing that fortunately everything is back to normal. He also specifies that his service has deployed significant logistical resources, including four fire trucks and two large capacity tanks. In addition, rescue vehicles for asphyxiated and injured were also visible at the scene of the fire.

In short, according to our information, it all started with the decision of the population of Lafiabougou to prevent the economic interest groups from dumping garbage on this transit site. “This morning, around 20 carts full of rubbish headed to the site to dump rubbish. The population opposed it, causing a stir. The security forces intervened and used tear gas which set fire to the depot”, testifies a sweaty witness.
