While senior leader Mallikarjuna Kharge is also contesting the election for the post of Congress President, Digvijay Singh is likely to withdraw from the race.

The election for the post of Congress President will be held on October 17. Today is the last day to file nominations. Among the senior leaders, Sasitharur and Digvijay Singh have received nomination papers so far. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Khelat, who first announced his candidacy, backed out due to internal party issues. In this context, it has been reported that Mallikarjuna Kharge is also going to file his nomination.

Mallikarjuna Kharge from Karnataka was elected as Member of Legislative Assembly for 9 consecutive terms from 1972 to 2009. Following this, he won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and served as the Minister of Labor and Employment in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.

After this, he served as the Minister of Railways in 2013. Following this, in 2014, he served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha of the Congress Party. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He also holds the post of Rajya Sabha Chairman of the Congress Party.

And Mallikarjuna Kharge will be the third Dalit leader of the Congress party if he is elected as Congress president. Since he is the most influential leader among the candidates contesting the Congress president election, he is considered to have a high chance of winning.

It is said that Mukul Wasni from the 23-member dissident team may also contest. Sasidharoor said that there will be a friendly competition for the post of Congress president.
