Mallorca: increasing number of corona cases because of Omikron – foreign policy

by time news

In Spain, 79.8 percent of the population is fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Even so, the incidence is skyrocketing across the country – including Mallorca.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health in Madrid reported a seven-day incidence of 424 (previous day: 377). 49,823 new infections were added within 24 hours. The previous daily record was 39,000 cases within 24 hours in January.

The Omikron variant now makes up almost half of all corona cases: According to the ministry, 47.2 percent of the cases identified between December 6 and 12 are the much more contagious variant.

In the Balearic Islands, the seven-day incidence on Monday was 318. On Tuesday, 829 new infections were reported (previous day: 588). There were 631 new corona cases on Mallorca (previous day: 546).

The rules in Mallorca

▶ ︎ A maximum of 15 people may meet outdoors in public, the limit is ten people indoors.

▶ ︎ The 3G rule applies in restaurants and accommodation, the entrance ticket is the EU Covid certificate. This also applies to covered outdoor areas of bars. Anyone who has not been vaccinated or recovered must be tested beforehand at their own expense.

▶ ︎ The 3G rule also applies in clubs and discos. Dancing is only allowed with a mask; curfew at 5 a.m.

▶ ︎ It is mandatory to wear a mask outdoors if there is no distance of at least 1.5 meters to people outside your own household.

▶ ︎ A minimum distance of two meters applies to beaches.

▶ ︎ Smoking is only allowed while standing, not while walking. The minimum distance of 1.5 meters to other people must be observed.

How long these rules will apply is questionable. Because of the spread of the Omikron variant, the Spanish government wants to discuss additional measures with the presidents of the regions in an extraordinary meeting. Some regions want to introduce night exit restrictions this week, including Catalonia.

Corona case numbers and measures in Portugal

87.9 percent of the Portuguese population are now vaccinated. Nevertheless, the number of new infections has recently risen to the highest level since February. The 7-day incidence on Tuesday was 328 per 100,000 inhabitants, 5754 new corona cases were reported in Portugal. In Portugal, too, the Omikron variant now accounts for almost half of all new infections.

Due to the sharp increase in the corona numbers, the measures will be tightened in Portugal from December 26th. A negative PCR or antigen test has been required for vaccinated persons to enter the country since the beginning of the month.

▶ ︎ The 3G rule already applies in restaurants. In the future, you will also have to show a negative Covid test when entering a hotel and other accommodation, as well as at sports or cultural events.

▶ ︎ Visiting shops is regulated more strictly.

▶ ︎ Bars and clubs have to close.

▶ ︎ From Monday there is a two-week home office obligation.

▶ ︎ A maximum of ten people are allowed to meet outdoors on New Year’s Eve.
