The Malmö City Library Denies Misinformation Regarding Arabic Translation of “Mein Kampf”

In a recent article published by the magazine Bulletin, it was reported that an Arabic translation of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” was spotted on a shelf among the books in the Arabic department at the Malmö city library. The information quickly spread across social and international media, causing widespread concern.

However, the Malmö city library has denied the information presented in the article. City librarian Åsa Sandström emphasized that the book in the picture published by the Bulletin is not “Mein Kampf,” but instead a biography of an Egyptian author.

“We are doing a thorough review of the book, and until it is finished, the book will be taken away,” said Åsa Sandström.

Sandström also clarified that the book was not placed on the shelf by an employee but was likely left there by a visitor. She mentioned that “Mein Kampf” is available to borrow from the library in Swedish, English, and Arabic translations.

“We have it, just like we have a lot of other books. Not all we have are good books; some are absolutely terrible,” Sandström stated.

In response to the controversy, the library has taken “Mein Kampf” off the open shelf and placed it in storage. Those interested in borrowing the book can request it from the library. Sandström emphasized the importance of providing access to the original text for interested readers.

“We think it is important that people can go to the original book and read for themselves. This is an extremely special book. But if no one can read it, it is easy for rumors to spread that what is written there is reasonable and true, without people being able to check for themselves,” Sandström explained.

The magazine Bulletin, which originally reported the presence of the Arabic translation of “Mein Kampf,” has not responded to inquiries. The library has also stated that it has not been able to locate a copy of the book in Arabic.

As the situation unfolds, the Malmö city library is committed to providing accurate information and ensuring that its collection reflects a diverse range of perspectives while promoting critical thinking and understanding among its readers.
