Man Arrested for Posing as Police Officer in Marinha Grande

A 52-year-old man was arrested in Marinha Grande, in the Leiria district, for approaching drivers pretending to be a police officer, announced the PSP this Sunday.

In a statement, the PSP reported that the fake police officer was arrested at 11 PM on Saturday, after a phone call to the Marinha Grande police station informing that, in Largo 5 de Outubro, “there was a poorly uniformed man wearing a short-sleeved polo and a police cap who was approaching and checking vehicles.”

“The PSP immediately went to the location, addressed the suspect, and confirmed that he was not a police officer, at which point he was placed under arrest,” it added.

According to a witness who was identified, “the suspect had an incoherent conversation with the drivers.”

Confiscated from the suspect—who has a criminal record—were a short-sleeved polo, a cap, a badge of the rank of chief, and a police badge, all of which are original police items.

The Marinha Grande PSP is conducting investigations to determine the origin of the uniform pieces and is urging drivers approached by the fake police officer to come to their facilities to provide more details about the encounter.
