Chinese customs authorities have arrested a man who tried to smuggle more than 100 live snakes hidden in his pants.

On Tuesday, the customs service reported that the individual was intercepted while trying to cross from the semi-autonomous city of Hong Kong to Shenzhen.

The official statement said that during the inspection, officers discovered six bags sealed with adhesive tape in the pockets of the suspect’s pants.

Upon opening the bags, they found live snakes of various shapes, sizes and colours. In total, 104 reptiles were seized, including milk snakes and corn snakes, many of which are not native to the region.

A video released by authorities shows two officers inspecting clear plastic bags filled with red, pink and white snakes writhing inside.

China, one of the world’s major animal trafficking hubs, has stepped up its efforts in recent years to combat illegal wildlife trade.

The country’s biosecurity and disease control laws prohibit the introduction of non-native species without the appropriate permits.

Regarding this case, the customs service warned that those who violate these regulations will be prosecuted according to the law, although the penalty that the detainee will face was not specified.
