A family friend has been arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 80 lakh from a Chennai-based teenager studying in the US for uploading a private photo on social networking sites.
A 55-year-old woman from Chennai lodged a complaint at the police station. The man who sent his private photo to his daughter, who is studying in the US, had allegedly threatened to upload the picture on his website if he did not pay Rs 80 lakh. Police arrested Ramesh, a resident of Lakshmi Nagar, Porur, with the phone number from which the photo was sent.
During interrogation, Ramesh said that while he was in the United States, he met the young woman and secretly took intimate photos of her when he went home as a family friend. Ramesh also said that he had threatened to release the private photos as he had cheated them by not repaying the loan of Rs 50 lakh.
