Man arrested in US for arms trafficking to Guanajuato, Mexico

Jose G. Medina, a 48-year-old man residing in Leesburg, Florida, was arrested and accused of arms trafficking toward Mexico. Medina was arrested for making false statements related to the purchase of armas of fire, which he acquired in 2023 with the intention of giving them to other people.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office USA (CBP) managed to intercept some of these armas in the border with MexicoIn May 2023, CBP officers apprehended an individual at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry, Texaswhen trying to enter Mexico with an arsenal that included 10 pistols, 9 rifles, 7 shotguns, 20 magazines and a large amount of ammunition.

The detainee confessed that he was traveling with the weapons from Orlando, Florida, to San Diego, California, and Guanajuato, Mexicoa region where cartels are fighting for territorial control. In November of the same year, CBP agents arrested another individual at the same port of entry with five firearms, two of which had been acquired by Medina.

Research and testing

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discovered that between January 1 and December 31, 2023, Medina purchased 82 firearms for a value of approximately $42,000a sum that significantly exceeded his reported annual income. In addition, one of the weapons purchased by an associate of Medina’s was recovered and traced by Mexican authorities through the ATF’s e-Trace system.

If convicted, Medina could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prisonn for the crime of materially false declaration.
