Man arrested on suspicion of stalking, stealing and abusing women in downtown Rio

A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of stalking, stealing and abusing women in downtown Rio de Janeiro this Tuesday (28). He targeted young women who were alone on the streets, according to police. At least seven victims reported the case at the 4th DP (Republic Square).

Deputy Márcia Beck Simões, responsible for the investigation, said that, during the approach, the suspect forced women to hand over belongings, such as cell phones and bank cards, and make transfers via Pix, under threat of death. Before leaving, he still touched the private parts of the victims.

“They were very terrified. When they arrived here, they were all very nervous to do the reconnaissance. It’s very important that they show up. If someone has been a victim and hasn’t registered it yet, come to the police station and do the reconnaissance, because that’s what will make them the police can get him to stay in jail longer”, said Márcia Beck Simões.

According to the delegate, the man denied the crimes at the police station and did not give any other statements. However, he will answer for the crimes of extortion, robbery and rape.

The investigation also finds out if others involved helped him in criminal practice.

“Transfers via Pix were made to other people. They will be identified and brought to the police station in continuation of the investigation. We believe that he did not act alone, that there was a gang behind it”, explained the delegate, adding that the suspect had audios , with threats.
