On July 2, the patient took a positive corona test after observing the well-known corona symptoms, such as fatigue and fever, in himself. But the next day, he noticed something else: he developed small, painful blisters and a rash on his face, torso and buttocks. By July 5, those blisters had transformed into lumps, which had spread further over his body. He was then admitted to the hospital in Palermo, where he tested positive for monkey pox.

Because the man had also had unprotected sex while traveling, they also tested him for STDs. Result? On top of that, he got a positive test for HIV-1. Based on the proteins in his blood, the researchers suspect that the infection was also recent.

July 11, the Italian man was released from the hospital, as the blisters had healed. At home he remained in isolation for some time.

But given the current COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in monkeypox virus cases, health facilities should be aware of that possibility.”
