In May 2023, a woman came into the hospital in Växjö with injuries to her abdomen and a bloodshot and swollen eye. She initially claimed that the injuries occurred when a bunk bed fell on top of her. Doctors were immediately suspicious and said the injuries did not fit the explanation.

The woman finally admitted that her husband had abused her. The woman is said to have been hit and kicked on the occasion. After a kick in the abdomen, she started bleeding, whereupon their daughter asked the father to drive her to hospital.

The man then, according to interrogations with the woman, must have said:

– We’re not going to take her to the hospital. Let her die. Leave her to die.

The man finally drove the woman to the emergency room where she was immediately sent for surgery.

“I’ll kill you if you say anything”

While the woman was hospitalized, the man took the opportunity to leave Sweden with the children. According to the preliminary investigation, he must have been very afraid that the woman would say something that would take custody away from him.

It was also the reason why she did not tell about the abuse in the first hearings by medical personnel.

– If you talk to anyone, I will kill you. You should not believe that the police or anyone else can protect you. I will kill you if you say anything, the woman says that the man has said in interrogation.

The man was arrested by Serbian police

When the man, who is a citizen of Sweden and Syria, suspected that she had told about it, he took their common child and went south through Europe. The idea was that they were going to their grandmother and grandfather in Iraq.

When they had arrived in Serbia, the children had been internationally wanted and the 40-year-old was arrested by Serbian police. The children state that they had been gone for about two months.

At the trial in Växjö district court, the 40-year-old denied having committed any crime. He maintained that his wife had suffered an accident at the residence in which she was injured by a bed. And regarding the trip with the children, he told us that it was a planned trip and that the children would be back in time for the start of school.

He was sentenced earlier this week to 14 months in prison for assault and gross abuse of children.
