Man sentenced to one year in prison for Snapchat riot calls

A Villeurbannais, aged 38, was punished with a one-year prison sentence for public and direct provocation to commit a crime or offense, and an armed crowd.

He was suspected of being the author of posts on Snapchat calling for rioting, murder and insurrection.

He was also suspected of selling equipment that could be used for riots such as mortars. He was arrested on July 9 and tried on Tuesday by a court which sentenced him, the prosecution told AFP, confirming information from the daily Progress.

The investigation to identify the author of the messages on Snapchat had been opened following a report from Interpol.

At the start of his police custody, the man had chosen to deny, declaring that he was unaware of the existence of such messages. He was then exonerated for lack of evidence. But a search of his home found various cell phones, including the one used to post the hate messages.
