Police Shoot and Kill Man on U.S. Highway 36 in Colorado

A fatal shooting occurred on U.S. Highway 36 near McCaslin Boulevard in Colorado, as police officers shot and killed a man who reportedly pointed a gun at them. The Colorado State Patrol reported that the incident took place around 11:40 a.m. when a trooper stopped a car and noticed bullet holes in the window. The trooper then requested backup before approaching the driver, who complied with the request to step out of the vehicle.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the driver initially put a gun down on his car, but then picked it up and pointed it at the trooper and Boulder County sheriff’s deputies during their conversation. “Shots were fired at that point,” stated the CSP, with one law enforcement officer’s equipment being struck by gunfire. It was not specified who fired first or if the suspect fired at all. The troopers and deputies at the scene attempted first aid, but the driver ultimately succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The identities of the suspect and the law enforcement officers involved in the shooting have not been disclosed. The Colorado State Patrol confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident. Aerial footage from Copter4 showed the stopped car on the shoulder of the highway, with several CSP and Boulder County Sheriff’s Officer cruisers stationed behind it as investigators surveyed the scene.

Following standard procedure in police shootings, the troopers and deputies who discharged their weapons have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation by the 20th Judicial District Critical Incident Team. CBS News Colorado reached out to the Colorado State Patrol for additional details but has not received a response at the time of reporting.
