Manchester United was in a bad position in the English Premier League in the recently concluded season. Everyone assumed that their coach Eric Ten Haag was being fired. But to everyone’s surprise, the English club renewed the contract with him for another year.

United confirmed the news of the contract renewal with a press release today, Thursday (July 4). According to the new contract, Ten Haag will stay at Manchester United until 2026. The 54-year-old coach previously joined United in 2022 on a three-year deal.

United, who last won the league trophy in 2013, have not fared well in the Premier League under Ten Hoag. Third in the 2022–23 season but finished 2023–24 in eighth place. However, by winning the FA Cup, United have confirmed playing in next season’s Europa League. Earlier, Ten Haag won the league cup in the first season.

“I am very pleased to have reached an agreement to continue working with the club,” Ten Haag said of the club’s contract extension. Looking at the last two years, there are many instances of improvement from the situation I took over, there is the glory of winning two trophies.’

The club’s sporting director Dan Ashworth’s reasoning for keeping ten Haag at United is, ‘Eric has established himself as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football by winning two trophies in two seasons. A review of the club revealed room for improvement in the latest season. Now we need to be more consistent.’

United are now looking forward to the start of their preparations for the 2024–25 season. They will play against Norwegian club Rosenberg on July 15.
