Mandatory virginity test for young woman on wedding day; Case against husband and parents

Jaipur: Complaint that a 24-year-old woman was forced to undergo a virginity test in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Police said that her husband’s parents forced the woman to undergo a virginity test. In the complaint, the woman says that her husband’s family avoided her by pointing out that the woman failed the test and the panchayat ordered her to pay Rs 10 lakh.

The woman got married on May 11 in Bhilwara. But on the very first day, the young woman was subjected to a virginity test. The complaint is that her husband and family insulted her by pointing out that she had failed the test and ordered her family to pay Rs 10 lakh in the ‘Khap Panchayati’ held at the local temple on May 31.

The girl had told her husband’s parents that she had been molested by a neighbor before her marriage. Police said that a case is pending in Subhash Nagar police station in this regard.

“The virginity test was done after noon. After that they discussed till night. I could not say anything because of fear. Then the husband and her husband’s parents beat her up”, says the woman in the complaint.

A case has been registered against the husband’s parents under sections 498A, 384, 509 and 120B.
