Malappuram: Manjeri Municipal Councilor Abdul Jaleel killed while undergoing treatment for hacking during a dispute over parking. Perinthalmanna died at 7:30 pm today (March 30) while on a ventilator at a private hospital in critical condition. Abdul Jalil is the 16th Ward Councilor of Manjeri Municipality.

Two suspects in the gang have been taken into police custody in connection with the incident. One of the accused is a defendant in several criminal cases. The accused are the main links in the cannabis-drug gang in the area.

Jaleel was attacked on Tuesday, March 29, at around 11 pm. While returning from Palakkad for business with a group of four friends and locals, the vehicle of the group including the councilor was stopped and attacked at Payyanad Thamarassery.

On the Kuttipara-Thamarassery road, a group of drunkards obstructed the councilor’s car without giving way. The councilor intervened and resolved the issue following an altercation between the two groups.

The group then chased the bike and threw the helmet into the car’s rear window. Abdul Jaleel was stabbed in the back of the head with a sharp iron rod. The back of the head was split by the impact of the blow. Soon after, the three-member gang escaped on a bike.

Friends in the car rushed Jalil to a private hospital in Manjeri and then to Perinthalmanna Hospital. Jaleel underwent surgery for a serious head injury but died on the ventilator.

Police said the wound did not look like it had been cut, but was struck in the back with a sharp iron bar, causing a deep wound. Manjeri police have registered a case and taken two accused into custody. Statements were taken from those who were with the counselor.

The investigation is being led by Inspector C. Alavi. He will be buried at Manjeri Central Juma Masjid after a police inquest and post-mortem.
