When ‘Devadutar Padi’ became a hit again

Devadoothar Paadi: The magical melody of ‘Devadoothar Paadi’ from Kathod Kathoram is a song that has been reborn from the nostalgia of the Malayalees. This song was composed by Ausepachan for the movie Kathod Katoram directed by Bharathan 37 years ago. The lyrics were by ONV Kurup. Devduthar became one of the most magical compositions of all time in his own songs when Ouseppachan put the melody to the meaningful lyrics.

This song is a fusion of Shuddhanyasi and Jog ragas. The song gives both the feel of melody and fast number. The song has a devotional aspect to it as the film is set against the backdrop of the festival. This beautiful song has been sung by KJ Yesudas, Krishnachandran, Latika and Radhika.

There is a certain magic hidden in this song that makes you want to listen to it again and again. That’s why a generation sang this song in festival grounds and ganams. After three-and-a-half decades, the crew of the film ‘Nna Than Kes Kod’ has unwittingly broken the decades of oblivion to hear that song, and Devduthar is once again raining down on the listeners as a melody. Neither the generation gap nor the changed musical tastes stand in the way of ‘Devaduthari”s magical melody.

All those who worked behind the song later became world famous musicians. Sivamani played the drums for the song. The melody was composed by the talented John Antony on the guitar. AR Rahman, then known as Dileep, played the keyboard for the song.

If the song Devduthar is 37 years old, the melody is even older than that, says Ousepachan. “Devaduthar sang a song that was done 37 years ago. But this song has been formed in my mind for fifty years. It’s a bit I composed myself and played on the violin during my teenage years. I enjoyed reading that bit in American folk style,” says Ousepachan.

Mammootty, Saritha and Nedumudi Venu were full in that song scene in Kathod Katoram. The song is shot on stage with Mammootty, Saritha and the choir singing together.
