It was revealed that dozens of paintings from Mansudae Art Studio, a direct agency of North Korea’s Workers’ Party of Korea, are being traded online, including through Naver Shopping. Mansudae Art Studio is a comprehensive art studio established in 1959 under the instructions of Kim Il-sung, the grandfather of Chairman Kim Jong-un, and is subject to UN sanctions against North Korea.
According to People Power Party lawmaker Park Chung-kwon, a former North Korean defector, on the 29th, Art Studio A in Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul is selling ‘Baekgyesu in the Valley of Cheonbulsa Temple in Geumgangsan Mountain’ by artist Hwang Young-jun of Mansudae Art Studio for 950,000 won through Naver. The art shop is also selling dozens of North Korean paintings. A domestic B online art auction site has also been auctioning works by artists affiliated with Mansudae Art Studio. It was revealed that the site promoted the artists of each work according to their ranks in North Korea, such as ‘Director of Mansudae Art Studio’ and ‘Director of Mansudae Art Studio.’
Mansudae Creative Studio was designated as a target of sanctions against North Korea by the UN Security Council in 2017. This is based on the judgment that foreign currency earned from selling works of art can be used to finance North Korea’s nuclear development. In Korea, the Financial Services Commission designated Mansudae Creative Studio as a subject of restrictions in December 2016. Accordingly, anyone who conducts a financial transaction without permission from the Financial Services Commission or conducts a financial transaction without permission while knowing that the other party to the transaction is subject to restrictions will be subject to imprisonment for up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
Rep. Park said, “The distribution of paintings by Mansudae Art Studio, which is subject to UN sanctions and prohibited by domestic law, raises concerns that the international community will view South Korea as not properly implementing sanctions against North Korea,” adding, “Individuals are also subject to punishment under the current law.” “Therefore, distribution channels and purchasers must be closely reviewed and guided to ensure that they have not violated the current law,” he said.
