The Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) may present the first production model of a car under the Volga brand in early summer 2024. Denis Manturov, Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, told reporters on the sidelines of the Eurasian Congress, transmits Interfax.
“How it will look, I think, colleagues will soon be able to demonstrate to the market. In terms of timeframe, this is approximately in a year, taking into account the completion of the procedure for selecting foreign partners, and approximately 9 months after the launch of this work is required to organize direct production,” the minister said, adding that the plant plans to produce the first production model of the Volga at the beginning of next summer. .
Manturov added that cars will be assembled at the sites that were previously occupied by foreign automakers who left the market. According to him, the production facilities will be adapted and modernized for the production of GAZ vehicles.
In early June, Manturov said that GAZ planned to start production of cars under the Volga brand in 2024 with the support of a new technology partner that could take over the vacant capacity after Volkswagen left. The company is currently negotiating with potential investors.
Manturov spoke about plans to revive the Volga and Pobeda car brands in the summer of 2022. He said that the project could be implemented in Nizhny Novgorod and other regions. At the same time, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, said that GAZ could revive the production of cars. He expressed hope that the enterprise would produce cars under the Volga brand.
Until March 2022, at the GAZ site, Volkswagen assembled Skoda (Octavia, Karoq, Kodiaq) and Volkswagen Taos models under a contract. The fact that Volkswagen decided to curtail the contract production of cars in Nizhny Novgorod, Vedomosti wrote in July 2022. On August 10, 2022, the parties terminated the agreement on contract assembly. Now the companies are conducting litigation over the terms of termination of the contract.
