Manuel Afonso Salazar, new territorial director of Caixabank in the Canary Islands

Manuel Afonso Salazar has been appointed territorial director of Caixabank in the Canary Islands, replacing Juan Ramón Fuertes, who will leave the entity on January 1. As the new head of this territorial department, Afonso will manage the business of the bank’s more than 220 branches, which serve more than one million customers, with assets under management of more than 12,300 million euros and a market share of 50 % in individuals and 54% in companies.

A native of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Afonso already held the position of territorial director in 2017, while Fuertes was the executive director of the BPI in Portugal, during his integration process at Caixabank.

Until now commercial director of Red in the Canary Islands is also an experienced director of Caixabank, an entity he joined in 1996. He has held positions of responsibility in the field of commercial management of Companies and Transactional Banking, the management of Business Areas , as well as the office.

Juan Ramón Fuertes joined Caixabank in 1981 and during his professional career at the entity he has held various management positions, such as general delegate, executive director (in the Balearic Islands, in Retail, Marketing and Quality and in the BPI project), territorial director in the Balearic Islands and since 2015, in the Canary Islands.

At the end of last month, Caixabank gathered around 70 shareholders in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Meritxell Soler, Director of Shareholder Relations, commented on the entity’s results for the period from January to September.

During the event, which was attended by Mercedes Ballester, commercial director of Private Banking for the Canary Islands Territory, and Guillermo Guigou, director of the Private Banking center, the commercial strength of Caixabank was highlighted “in a year marked by the execution of the integration and in which, by obtaining cost synergies, it has been possible to place profitability at levels similar to previous years”.
