He was 86 years old and a career as a writer of more than six decades, punctuated by some prestigious awards. In 1967, his book Live was the Julián del Casal Poetry Prize, from the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba. In 1994 he received the Ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Award for his book Memories for the winter. His contribution to Cuban culture earned him the La Avellaneda medal from the Cuban Cultural Center in New York in 2006.
