It looks like the original and plays the old plug-in cards: After the cult console “Atari 2600”, the successor model “7800” is now coming back.

New editions of old game consoles have been very popular for several years. Following the consoles from Nintendo and Sega, manufacturer Atari also modernized its cult console “Atari 2600” last year and brought it onto the market as the “Atari 2600+”. Now the company is upping the ante and bringing back the “Atari 7800”, according to a statement from the manufacturer.

The “Atari 7800+” console was developed together with the game developer Plaion and will be launched worldwide on November 29, 2024. The device is equipped with a wireless gamepad, it continues.

In addition to the accessories, Atari also supplies the game “Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest”. This is an action-adventure in which the protagonist, according to the manufacturer’s description, “navigates through isometric labyrinths while collecting crystals and avoiding enemies”.

Atari offers more games in its online shop. There are also accessories for the new edition “Atari 7800+”. This includes a wireless joystick that is based on the original from the 1980s.

If you choose the so-called “Controller Mega Bundle”, you will receive the console, the gamepad, the joystick and two paddle controllers equipped with a rotary knob.

As with the “Atari 2600+” console, the new edition of the “7800+” can handle the old modules. The manufacturer promises that the cartridge slot is compatible with hundreds of original “Atari 7800” games – the modules for the “2600” also fit in the slot.

The “Atari 7800+” console costs 119.99 euros and can be pre-ordered now.

The original device came onto the European market in 1986 and was intended to replace the less successful “Atari 5200” model. The device was completely backwards compatible with the “2600” console, but was unable to match its success.
