The automotive industry has gathered at the ‘Automobile Barcelona 2023′ show to celebrate the conference ”The moment of decarbonization and electrification’, in collaboration with the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC) and the Catalan Employers’ Association. Automotive Distribution (Fecavem), under the sponsorship of Caixabank Payments & Consumer.

The meeting was held at a key moment for the automotive industry, where both employers together with the rest of the members of the value chain have insisted on the need to demand from the Government and the Administration as a whole measures that allow progress in electrification and comply, in this way, with the decarbonisation objectives demanded by Europe and promote the entry of the electrified vehicle in the national market.

The closing of the day has had the participation of the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez. During her speech, the minister stressed that Spain must be at the forefront in electrification, given the importance of the automotive industry “the second European manufacturer and ninth worldwide”. The minister has recognized that there have been “bottlenecks” and has praised the effort being made by the industry to transform the fleet. “We are determined to accompany this industry in its restructuring.” In addition, she has remarked that “we play a lot because manufacturers decide where they manufacture.”

The event included two presentations and a round table to address the current situation of the automotive industry towards zero-emission mobility and analyze the market prospects for its shift towards electrified and low-emission vehicles.

The first presentation was given by Xavier Oms, Caixabank’s mobility director, who wanted to put on record that we must bet on electrification and make it accessible to all. Oms has not doubted the efforts that manufacturers are making in the face of the “challenge” of efficiency, costs and innovation, and has considered that the involvement of the Administration is “very necessary”.

This was followed by the discussion table ‘What car should I buy?’, with the participation of José López-Tafall, general director of ANFAC, José López-Tafall, who stressed that “the sector is committed to the zero emission objectives set by Europe, but urgent measures are needed to support and encourage the electrification of the automotive industry in our country and make the electrified vehicle accessible to all the citizens. We are not moving at the pace we need to make a successful transformation and we are falling behind our European neighbours. From ANFAC, we have presented to the Government the 2023-2025 Roadmap, as well as other previous plans that include proposals in this matter so as not to harm a sector that represents 10% of GDP and generates two million direct and indirect jobs.

Jaume Roura, president of Fecavem, has also participated in the table around the electrification of the sector. In his turn to speak, Roura has indicated: «Our companies, as an objective, is to provide a mobility service. We do not care to sell or provide a service with one type of motorization or another. But we are clear that whatever it is, we must always ensure that it is fulfilled with the most sustainable possible and with the guarantee for the consumer that it will be easy enough to recharge as it is today with combustion engines.

Jaime Moreno, General Director of Land Transport of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, has highlighted that dialogue mechanisms already exist between the Government and the sectors involved to advance in this transition. We are aware of the importance of this transformation and that we must work together to promote it and maintain the value that the entire automotive value chain has for Spain.

For his part, Jordi Carmona, UGT-FICA industry secretary, has revealed that “the transformation of the automotive sector is carried out in an orderly and fair manner or the repercussion in job losses will be very considerable and will in turn create a gap social mobility and territorial».

Likewise, Rafael Guerrero, head of mobility of the CCOO Industry Federation, has stated that «CCOO we are convinced that the right attitude to govern the current transformation process towards sustainable mobility is to turn challenges into a lever of opportunity to gain industrial sovereignty by attracting the entire value chain of the new sustainable mobility to the country. A process that is an opportunity to promote the industry as the engine of a more resilient economic model and even, thus putting the economy at the service of people and reinforcing the Welfare State.»

Along the same lines, Iván Tallón, Wallbox’s country manager, has pointed out that “Spain continues to be at the bottom of Europe both in adoption of the electric vehicle and in the deployment of public charging infrastructure. The Moves III plan is too slow and bureaucratic, and has proven to be ineffective for us to take the final step towards zero-emission mobility.”
