Berlin – The proportion of rental apartments in Berlin is very high at around 84 percent, but 60 percent of Berliners dream of living in their own four walls. In Germany it is even more than two thirds. The problem: 47 percent cannot afford home ownership because they lack the financial means, in Berlin it is 48 percent. This is the result of an online survey by YouGov Deutschland GmbH from April 2021, in which 3131 employees and students took part. The survey was carried out on behalf of the financial service provider Swiss Life Select, a subsidiary of the listed Swiss financial advisory and insurance group Swiss Life, which emerged from the formerly listed AWD.
According to the survey, whether people are dreaming of a property or are already planning to buy it and whether the necessary financial resources are available varies from state to state. In Baden-Württemberg, Bremen, Hamburg and Bavaria, more than 70 percent dream of living in their own home. People in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg, where the share of property supporters is between 50 and 59 percent, are more cautious.
