Nearly 150 people were trapped in a fire that broke out yesterday in the 40-storey World Trade Center building in Hong Kong.

A fire broke out in the basement of the building where the shops are located in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong’s busiest shopping center.

Reuters reports that a fire broke out in a utility room at noon.

As the fire spread, more than 100 people rushed to the 39th floor. There are restaurants, shops, offices. There they were trapped, unable to get out.

Seven women and a man were taken to hospital suffering from heavy smoke and one of them was reported to be half unconscious.

The Hong Kong government said firefighters were battling the blaze with powerful water pipes and using ladders and respirators to rescue those trapped. In the published pictures it was possible to see that the building was engulfed in smoke. Firefighters set up security barriers around the building.

Full details of the fire were not immediately available until the press release.
