Painful news arrives in mailboxes and mailboxes. Each year, the end of summer coincides with the mailing of the property tax notice. The tax letter is much feared by 32 million owners because its value continues to increase every year. 2024 is no exception to the law with, at least, an increase of 3.9% for everyone. All property owners must pay this fee. All of them, or almost.
The law provides certain provisions that allow part of the population not to pay this tax. Among them, retirees. Thousands of them are exempt from this tax on their property, practically, without having to take a single step. By itself (thanks to the reference-reference information), the tax authorities know from whom they must not demand property tax. In total, more than a million retirees benefit from this program, according to the latest official figures.
Total exemption is permitted by law only with regard to two criteria: age and income of the owners. For the first, you must be 75 years or older on the previous January 1. That is, people who celebrate their 75th birthday in February or March will not benefit from it.
After all, the resource limit must not be exceeded. Constantly increasing every year, at the same rate as inflation, the ceiling is set, for 2023 in mainland France, at 12,455 euros for a person and 19,107 euros for a couple for example.
If the amount of income 2023, declared in the spring of 2024 by a person or a couple, is less than these ceilings and declarations are 75 years old on January 1, then there is no property tax to pay.
Created in 1965, this program benefits older and moderate retirees. The established income ceiling corresponds to 1037 euros per month for one person and a minimum of 1600 euros per month for two. For young retirees, an automatic reduction of 100 euros in property tax is applied from the age of 65 if the resources are below the same thresholds.
