First case of compensation for all affected consumers
Apply from today… Payment in Nexon Cash

Nexon Korea has decided to pay 21.9 billion won to 800,000 users of paid items in the game ‘Maple Story’ as compensation for damages caused by probability manipulation. The average compensation amount per person is approximately 200,000 won, and the maximum compensation amount is approximately 10 million won.

The Korea Consumer Agency and the Fair Trade Commission announced on the 22nd that Nexon Korea accepted the compensation plan recommendation of the Consumer Dispute Mediation Committee. This decision is the first case since the introduction of the collective dispute mediation system in 2007 where compensation was given to all consumers who suffered the same damages based on the recommendation of the mediation committee, and the amount of compensation is the largest ever.

Accordingly, all users who used the Red and Black Cubes, which are paid items in MapleStory, from March 1, 2019 to March 5, 2021, even if they did not participate in the collective dispute mediation, will receive compensation. 3.1% of the Red Cube usage amount and 6.6% of the Black Cube usage amount can be paid in Nexon Cash, which can be converted into cash. Those eligible can apply on the Nexon homepage from the 23rd of this month until the end of the year.

In January of this year, the Fair Trade Commission imposed a corrective order and a fine of 11.6 billion won on Nexon, saying that it initially set the probability of each Cube option to be equal, but then changed the probability structure in September 2010 so that popular options with high preferences appeared less frequently.

This is the first time that the Consumer Agency has recruited victims and conducted a group dispute mediation procedure after the Fair Trade Commission imposed a surcharge. At the People’s Livelihood Forum in January of this year, President Yoon Seok-yeol stated, “Consumer protection is the most important thing in fostering the game industry,” and the Consumer Agency began recruiting victims in consultation with the Fair Trade Commission. The Consumer Agency explained, “Although there were about 5,800 applicants for this group dispute mediation, we presented a mediation plan acceptable to the parties in about five months from the date of application for group dispute mediation on March 4.”
