In 1986, one of the greatest moments in the history of the game was recorded. A legendary Diego Maradona slalom and another goal with the hand that arranged for Argentina to win the World Cup for England, have also become iconic for many years to come and will forever belong to the history book of football. Number 10 did the unbelievable, and this time, another history was recorded.
The shirt worn by Maradona in that game was up for auction and broke the record, when an avid (and wealthy) fan whose identity was not revealed paid a sum of around £ 7 million, which made the shirt the most expensive in the history of the sport.
Steve Hodge, the England national team midfielder at the time, was the lucky one to exchange shirts with Maradona and he put the item up for auction, which as mentioned broke all records. The previous record in the world of sports was £ 4.4 million, a sum paid in 2019 for the shirt worn by Babe Roth, the New York Yankees legend in baseball.
