If Marc-Antoine Charpentier never reached the opera, he nevertheless created lyrical masterpieces, such as the biblical tragedy in music David et Jonathas, written in 1688 for the Louis-le-Grand college. The synopsis relates a subject from the Old Testament: the love that unites David to Jonathan, son of King Saul, who, convinced of David’s betrayal and decided to fight against him, will be defeated, while Jonathan dies in the arms of his victorious friend. Sensitivity, perfection of style, refinement, dramatic intensity, tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen portrays a superlative David. Facing him, the well-singing Jonathas by Caroline Arnaud may seem a little dull, while the Saul by David Witczak deploys a vigorous distress. The direction of Gaétan Jarry, at the head of his Ensemble Marguerite Louise, is a fine playwright. Marie Aude Roux

Using creation as a means of survival in a hostile environment was the common objective of the composers brought together here by Yulianna Avdeeva. The first of them, Wladyslaw Szpilman (1911-2000), owes his notoriety only to his situation during the Shoah, in Poland, which inspired Roman Polanski to make the film The pianist (2002). Mazurka, touching mazurka written in 1942, refers directly to this episode. There Suite “The Life of the Machines” (1933) allows, on the other hand, to appreciate all the talent of Szpilman in the imagery without complex specific to the music of the interwar period and his skill as a pianist, which Yulianna Avdeeva honors . The explosive Sonate n° 1, by Dmitri Shostakovich, and the sprawling Sonate n° 4, de Mieczyslaw Weinberg, then benefit from an incredible technical precision as well as a great accuracy of tone. About the 8th Sonata, of Prokofiev, she knows under the fingers of Yulianna Avdeeva an interpretation of an overwhelming depth. Pierre Gervasoni

Words and Action. Anthology 1948-1990

Visual of the box “Words and Gestures – Anthology 1948-1990”, by Léo Ferré. PANTHÉON-BARCLAY-MEMORY AND THE SEA/UNIVERSAL MUSIC

On July 14, 1993, Léo Ferré died at his home in Castellina in Chianti (Tuscany). Thirty years ago, therefore, commemorated by the recent marketing of an anthological box in 431 titles. Consider the studio shots of the first recordings, at the end of the 1940s and during the 1950s, for Le Chant du monde and Odéon, those of the long collaboration from 1960 to 1974 with the Barclay company, then of the passage to various houses ( CBS, RCA, EPM) where he became master of his orchestrations, his arrangements and led large formations. A selection of titles accompanies this globally chronological journey in a lyrical work, with extensive texts, carried away by a voice that ranges from the most beautiful tenderness to rage and brilliance. And, from start to finish, Ferré’s passion for poetry, which irrigates his writing, and which is also illustrated by the volumes of the box set which bring together his settings of the words of Apollinaire, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine , from Aragon.
