Basketball star Marc Gasol highlighted this Wednesday the importance of “commitment to the common good” above the individual interest which, in his opinion, is key to success, both in sport and in business because, in both areas, “not everything is worth it to win“.
The one who was an NBA player from 2008 to 2021 participated this Wednesday in a dialogue with the entrepreneur and founder of the human resources company Eurofirms, Miquel Jordà, in the fourth edition of the forum on business leadership and CEO management Congress held this Wednesday in Murcia.
There he explained how he decided to resign from the American league to return to Spain to manage the local team Básquet Girona, and to offer sports training to children and adults when he felt that “had given all he could give” as a professional player and felt “empty” personallyt.
Since this new project, he has insisted on the relevance he gives to the value of commitment for the good of the team, sacrificing individual interest as the key to success for teams, since, in his opinion, when this common commitment fails, “it is a guarantee of more weakness”.
In this sense, he pointed out how in the United States “space, freedom of movement” is promoted in both business and play however, the Spanish basketball team was able to demonstrate how the “strength of the group, the union” could overcome the individual quality of the American players.
About leadership, he has considered that it is something that gives “time and experience”, since before leading a team, it is necessary to form an identity based on learned references and values.
Besides, has considered it essential that the leader knows how to “think more about the group than focus on himself”again, relative to this central value of group strength.
The multi-award winning player has also claimed error as a basic pillar of learning because, in his opinion, “to grow you need to make mistakes and deal with them in a positive way”.
He also recalled the gift that one of his coaches gave him: a mirror to look at, he explained, before criticizing another teammate or an attitude for a mistake made.
Finally, he reflected on the impact that elite athletes can have on society and encouraged clubs to “let their stars out”, allow them to participate in projects linked to social development and support for minors and groups vulnerable to give them “physical and emotional tools to manage their day-to-day life”, as not only will these players have a positive impact on young people, but this will also have an impact on their own well-being.
