Marc Márquez breaks all the odds in the first GP of the season in Portugal

by time news

BarcelonaMarc Márquez is an unpredictable rider. The one from Honda has beaten all the forecasts and set the best time in the opening of the World Cup at the Portimao circuit. The Catalan has overcome a less competitive bike than he would like and has improved, on two occasions, the record of the Portuguese circuit. With this great brand, Márquez has achieved the pole and will go first in this afternoon’s sprint (4 p.m., DAZN) and in this Sunday’s race (3 p.m., DAZN).

Despite having one of the least competitive bikes on the grid, Márquez has been the smartest. The one from Cervera has taken advantage of the wheel of other pilots to maintain a demonic pace and manage to beat the timer. With this record time, he already has 92 poles in his career—in all competitions—. This year, recovered from the injury that kept him away from the asphalt for more than a year, he is again applying as a candidate for the title. “I don’t know how I’ve done it, juggling! I need someone in front so I can do the times. Maybe not the prettiest way to do it, I know. The pole it’s not our real position, but we’ve already won something,” he said when he got off the bike.

In a few hours, at 4 pm, the first sprint race in the history of MotoGP will be held. It is the premiere of this new competition format that divides the weekend into two races. Saturday morning the pole and, a few hours later, the first race takes place with half as many laps (12) as the original Grand Prix. Half points are also awarded. The Sunday race does not suffer any changes with this new format.

The one from Cervera has touched the sky in the premiere of this 2023 MotoGP World Championship and will start from the most advanced place on the starting grid. In addition, he will maintain – whatever happens in the sprint – this first place for this Sunday’s race (3 p.m., DAZN).
