Ducati rider Marc Marquez seized the MotoGP world championship lead on Saturday by winning a chaotic Indonesian Grand Prix sprint race at Mandalika, capitalizing on a first-corner pileup and a late tyre-pressure warning that sidelined his title rival Jorge Martin.
First-Corner Chaos and the Turn 1 Incident at Mandalika
The 13-lap sprint at Mandalika started with immediate drama when polesitter Raul Fernandez and Marco Bezzecchi crashed out at the opening corner. Knowing they faced a raw speed deficit against the factory Aprilias on the straight, the Ducati contingent aimed to get their noses ahead right away. Fabio Di Giannantonio dove down the inside on his VR46 machine, grabbing the optimal position into the opening right-hander.
Bezzecchi, positioned under braking next to Fernandez on the extreme outside, found himself wrong-footed by the Bologna bikes on his inside.

At Mandalika’s Turn 1, it was truly a case of ‘four into one doesn’t go’ but ultimately a racing incident.

Tyre Pressure Warning Forces Martin to Yield Lead
The first-corner chaos gifted Jorge Martin a surprise early lead with open road ahead of him, aboard an Aprilia that had not quite been ticking as well for him as the Fernandez and Bezzecchi bikes had. The Aprilia rider stretched his advantage to over a second during the opening laps, looking uncatchable as he laid down the fastest lap on lap four. But a sudden tactical shift changed the entire complexion of the race.
With five laps remaining, Martin suddenly sat up and waved Marquez through into the lead. Paddock analysis pointed to a tyre-pressure warning on his dashboard, triggered because he was running in clean air instead of the turbulent traffic his crew had prepped for.
The recovery plan unravelled on the penultimate lap. Martin pushed hard to reclaim the position but ran wide off the track, tumbling out of the podium places entirely and crossing the finish line in fourth position.
Podium Finishers and the Updated World Championship Standings
Marquez inherited the front and held it to the checkered flag, completing the 13-lap distance in 19m 37.125s to claim maximum sprint points and take the championship lead. Behind him, Trackhouse Racing’s Ai Ogura secured a strong second place, finishing 0.509 seconds back after advancing alongside Fermin Aldeguer through Qualifying 1.

Fabio Di Giannantonio celebrated his birthday by completing the podium in third on his VR46 Ducati, holding off the recovering Martin by finishing 0.835 seconds behind the winner. Alex Marquez rounded out the top five for Gresini Ducati 3.410 seconds back, while Pedro Acosta took sixth after serving a long-lap penalty for exceeding track limits.
Last year’s winner Fermin Aldeguer finished seventh, with Francesco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo rounding out the points-scorers in a race where nearly every rider selected soft tyres front and rear.
| Position | Rider | Team | Time / Gap |
