“In my opinion, the National Rally has no place in this demonstration,” said Olivier Véran this Wednesday. Asked at the end of the Council of Ministers about the rally against anti-Semitism organized on Sunday in Paris by the President of the Senate Gérard Larcher and the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet, the government spokesperson deplored that the RN “is incapable of breaking with the anti-Semitic roots” of the party from which it comes, the National Front.

A few days ago, “we heard Jordan Bardella (the president of the RN, Editor’s note), who did not know if Jean-Marie Le Pen’s remarks were anti-Semitic”, castigated Olivier Véran, recalling that “French justice has answered these questions by condemning Jean-Marie Le Pen for anti-Semitism. Marine Le Pen had “the opportunity once again this morning to denounce the president of the RN (…), she did not make that choice,” he added.

This is why he believes that the far-right party “has no place” at the march. However, it is a “public demonstration, in which everyone is free, in conscience, to participate or not,” he added. The participation of the RN is “not a determining criterion of whether I will participate or not” assured the former Minister of Health, “which does not prevent us from deploring” their presence.

The Socialist Party and EELV, for their part, announced their presence at the rally, while castigating that of the RN, while LFI and its deputies announced this Wednesday morning in a statement that they “will not participate” because of the arrival of the extreme right in this march. The PCF for its part requested clarification on this presence of the RN.

The presence of Élisabeth Borne confirmed

Olivier Véran specified that Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne “will participate” in the parade. “Each member of the government will have the opportunity to make their decision,” he announced. He should “probably” be alongside the Jewish community of Grenoble on Sunday, with whom he has “made a commitment”, said this former Grenoble MP, believing that it is “important to be able to show our support in the provinces” . As for the presence of the president, who said during a dinner Tuesday evening with the executives of the majority that he would “let it be known [sa] position in the coming days”, “this was not discussed in the Council of Ministers”, declared the spokesperson.

La France insoumise announced this Wednesday that it “will not participate” in the demonstration due in particular to the presence of the far right. “I think you have to have rigor and consistency in your opinions. I see Mr. Mélenchon congratulating himself that the RN and its supporters had decided to demonstrate against the pension reform in the street, so he must find another argument,” responded Olivier Véran.
